this whole page is spoilers

like the actual central thing. go read literally anything else first.

before

she ran a sanctuary. a shelter, with rules:

  • no weapons
  • nobody gets chased through the door
  • no continuing old fights under its roof
  • guests don’t owe anyone anything afterwards

she was the Keeper of it. that was the job, and it was the whole job.

she had a different name back then too. Halen. she doesn’t use it and she doesn’t want it used.

the promise

a queen promised to respect those rules.

then later the shelter got inconvenient. so the queen tried to weasel out of it - got someone else to do the actual dirty work, and went “well technically i didn’t break anything”.

the sanctuary was destroyed. the Keeper was killed.

after

she came back wrong.

out of the last coal still going in the shelter’s fire. she built the body she has now out of whatever was lying around, which was ash and poison and wreckage.

first thing she did once she could move was go through the ruins looking for guests.

she couldn’t safely touch any of them anymore. she went looking anyway.

and then everyone had opinions

after that, everything about the whole disaster started sticking to her.

physically yeah, the body is literally made out of the place. but people kept handing her labels too. the dead Keeper. the shelter reborn. living proof of what happened. a monster. a relic. a weapon.

she is furious about this and has been for a good while now.

where she actually landed

she’s not the old Keeper put back together. the sanctuary is gone, the guests are scattered or dead, and there’s no version of this where she tidies it up and pretends nothing happened.

she’s also not the coal, or the poison, or the thing a broken promise left behind. none of those get to own her.

she’s somewhere in between - between the old life and the new body, between shelter and ruin, between fire and person, between what she used to be and what everybody else keeps trying to make her into.

she refuses all of it. she picked being herself instead, and picked the name to go with it.

which is why she reacts like she does when someone tells her what she “really” is. it’s not some philosophical position she holds. it’s the thing she had to fight for.
